Brett scanned every person’s eyes, one at a time. “My old friend, who is a local FBI agent, has been supportive and helpful in our efforts up to this point. However, we have two problems. First, he is concerned that we may get in over our heads; imagine that,” He chuckled.

Everyone smiled.

“If he knew everything that has happened, I would bet he’d ask us to back off. Plus, other than Tom’s cell phone, which we can’t even talk about, we don’t have enough clear evidence to wrap up the case. Our goal tomorrow morning is to change that. We need to find that evidence.

“Of course, our overall goal is to nail these bastards in a way that will destroy their crime ring. Only then will we clear the air and prevent these crimes from ever happening to Tom’s business and others. Only then will problems like insurance issues disappear. Only then will these violations that destroy good people’s lives go away.”

Brett paused, acknowledging their support. “We need to go on this trip with a coherent plan. To start, we are going to use the joyriding cowboys cover again. I know it is almost too much, but it is believable. If we find ourselves in an adversarial position, we should be treated more like a nuisance than a problem. And with our horses, we can move quickly and quietly, especially on some trails. We need to move efficiently and communicate effectively. We need to bring a small camera that can shoot still and video images. And we may need to record audio. Sometimes, thieves and criminals can have loose lips if you allow them the opportunity to talk.”

Tom interrupted, “At the store, we sell a compact Ricoh weatherproof digital camera that shoots still images and video. It also has a built-in audio recorder. I’ll get us set up with them.”

“Great, and Tom, I’d like you to review supplies and other needs. For example, what will Sage need at the truck?”

“I think my shotgun should do the job,” Sage threw out.

“Yeah, in a life and death situation, but beyond that, I’d rather see you start with a little mace or bear spray,” Tom replied.

“Bear spray is potent and debilitating, especially if you hit someone head-on; it packs one hell of a punch,” Mark pointed out.

“We have four two-way radios that we will all need to monitor continuously. Sage will stay with the truck and trailer. The rest of us are going to split up. Mark and Tom will ride to the south side of the camp. Once you’re there, split again, and we can triangulate the camp. One of you needs to cover the south side, while the other covers the northwest. I’ll cover the northeast. We need images of the camp from all three areas to both illustrate and map it. Try to stay on the trail system that starts south of the old logging road and stay out of sight. And remember, take your pictures from as much cover as possible.
